5th Grade Religion
Our next three
chapters of study are as follows: Chapter 6: Jesus Christ,
son of God, Chapter 7: The Death, Resurrection, and Ascension
of Jesus, and Chapter 8: The Promise of a Helper, A Scripture
Story. Chapter 6 focuses on what the name Jesus means, other
titles for Jesus, plus Mary the Mother of Jesus. In Chapter
7, we will discuss the Passover, The Paschal Mystery, and
the events of Jesus' death, resurrection, and ascension. Chapter
8 is a scripture story from John's Gospel telling of Jesus'
promise to send an Advocate, the Holy Spirit, to help the
disciples carry on with building God's Church.
6th Grade Science
We have just
begun an Earth Science unit focusing on Geology. Currently
we are working on Chapter 24 which includes discussions of
geologists, plate tetonics, and the interior of the Earth.
Chapter 25 will focus on how the Earth changes with a major
discussion of Niagara Falls. Chapter 26 will discuss agents
of weathering (water, wind, and ice), erosion and sedimentation.
Lastly we will examine volcanoes, earthquakes, and take a
look at different types of rocks and the rock cycle from the
Science Plus Level Red.
7th Grade Science
We are now entering
a Life Science Unit focusing on life processes in the Science
Plus Level Blue book. Chapter 1 will be an examination of
where the energy to sustain life comes from. We will be studying
the process of photosynthesis and plant structures needed
for the process to occur. Chapter 2 will be an investigation
of the need for water and the process of transpiration, diffusion,
osmosis, and cohesion. The last chapter of the unit will explore
how cells turn food into energy through the process of respiration.
Remember, plants breathe oxygen too!
6th Grade Religion
Our next chapter
of study is Chapter 7: The Transfiguration of Jesus. We will
be reading the scripture and discussing the roles of Elijah
and Moses in the story, plus learning the meaning of the Transfiguration.
We will follow with another scripture story in Chapter 8:
The Suffering Servant. Here we will examine Isaiah's Servant
Songs and compare them to Jesus' suffering on the cross. Chapter
9: Jesus' Passion and Death will be an in-depth look at why
Jesus came to Earth and died on the cross for us. Included
topics will be Original Sin, the Paschal Mystery, and Redemption.
5th Grade Science
We are continuing
our study of characteristics of living organisms. So far we
have talked about movement and will next study growth. Included
will be human growth, growth of other animals, and plant growth.
We will also touch on the characteristic of reproduction briefly.
Chapter 6 will be a discussion of the characteristic of response
to stimuli. Included in this chapter will be discussions about
seasonal behavior of animals and adaptations to enviroments.
The last chapter of this unit will look at the characteristic
of all living organisms are made of cells. Here we will perform
microscopy and make observations of cells. Also 5th grade
will begin the D.A.R.E. program on Feb. 1st. This program
will be presented every Friday for 10 weeks by Officer Harsen
of the Bradford City Police Department.
8th Grade Science
8th Grade will
soon be finishing their Earth Science Unit about weather.
In the last chapter of this unit we will be discussing the
concepts of pressure and its relationship to the atmosphere
and to the ocean. Next we will begin a Physical Science Unit
examining machines, work, and energy. In the first chapter
of this unit the focus will be on the scientific meanings
of work, energy, and power, along with ways to calculate each.
The second chapter of this unit will examine mechanical systems
in terms of efficiency, mechanical advantage, and energy transfer.
